MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) has started to remit its share to the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) this week, chairman Patrick Gregorio said, following the Supreme Court (SC) ruling.

The SC earlier affirmed the ruling that the Pagcor should remit 5% of gross earnings to the PSC, which was mandated by Republic Act No. 6847.

Gregorio, during the groundbreaking ceremony of the National Taekwondo Center in the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex on Thursday, said that the Pagcor already started to do so.

“Nagsimula na po yan kahapon. Tuloy-tuloy na po yan, buwan-buwan, tuloy-tuloy na po yan,” he told reporters.

Then-congressman Yeng Guiao, back in 2016, went to court to question pushing for the funding as mandated by the law.

According to section 26 of R.A. 6847, the 5% gross income from the Pagcor is part of the funding to finance the country’s integrated sports development programs.

“So, the funds, the blessings we get, we now turn over right away and work with the [national sports associations] to make sure that they get world-class facilities,” Gregorio added.

He also thanked Pagcor chairman Al Tengco and the government-owned and controlled corporation’s board for the remittance.

“I have no plans of stopping and making sure we develop Rizal [Memorial Sports Complex,] Philsports, Baguio and Philippine sports all over the country.”

During the event, Gregorio said that the new taekwondo center, which will be built in the old PSC bowling alley, is part of the agency’s improvement of facilities.

It is targeted to be finished by December of this year.

The bowling alley, on the other hand, will now be at the New Clark City.

Gregorio said the center could have 100 taekwondo jins training all at the same time.

Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) president Rafael Alunan III, for his part, said that the new training center will “now be able to elevate its national team and the national training pool to the desired level of global competitiveness.”

“This center once produced our world champions in bowling like Commissioner Bong Coo, Paeng Nepomuceno, Arianne Cerdena… This time I assure you more world champions in Taekwondo will emerge from the NTC,” he said.

“We will faithfully continue the tradition of producing world champions.”

The center will also enable the PTA to host international tournaments starting next year, and could “broaden Philippine sports development,” Alunan added.

“The groundbreaking signals a bright future not only for Philippine Taekwondo, but Philippine sports in general. I'm excited to get to that moment.”
