MANILA, Philippines — It took three months for FIBA to study SBP’s appeal to recognize Mike Phillips as a local eligible for Gilas and the decision was finally made yesterday. FIBA secretary-general Andreas Zagklis has informed SBP executive director Erika Dy that Phillips is now cleared to play for the Philippine national basketball team as a local “without restriction.” Dy said the effectivity is immediate. Asked for his reaction, Gilas head coach Tim Cone said it’s too late for this coming FIBA window but “definitely, we’d like him for the next.”

Phillips, who has been staying in shape in St. Johns, a suburb of Jacksonville, Florida, since ending the UAAP season as Finals MVP last December, said he can’t wait to play for the country again. Phillips suited up for Gilas at the 2023 SEA Games and won a gold medal but it wasn’t a FIBA-sanctioned event. “Playing at the SEA Games in 2023 was an amazing experience and something that I cherish deeply as a Filipino,” he said. “Now that I’m able to represent Gilas on the FIBA stage, I’ll always be ready to answer the call of duty para sa bayan.” Phillips said he’s staying in game-shape, following specific programs prepared by La Salle strength/conditioning coach Migs Aytona. “I’m also in touch with my former high school in Florida to use their facilities and resources,” he added. “I’ve been studying Gilas film. I’m grateful to Ma’m Erika and the SBP family in helping achieve my dream to represent the country.”

Phillips called it a blessing, huge honor, life-long dream and answered prayer to officially be eligible to play for Gilas. “Handa na akong lumaban para sa ating bansa,” he said. “Ibibigay ko lahat ng kaya ko at ang buong puso ko. I can’t wait to compete alongside my fellow Filipinos as we continue pushing Philippine basketball forward.”
