Mike Phillips tagged as local for Gilas

MANILA, Philippines — The frontline of Gilas Pilipinas moving forward continues to get bigger.
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced that FIBA has now classified Mike Phillips as a local in all FIBA tournaments.
The former La Salle big man, who won two titles in the collegiate ranks, will provide size and energy to the frontcourt of the Philippines when he suits up.
“The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas thanks FIBA for its swift action in hearing our request and classifying Mike Phillips as a player without restriction,” the basketball governing body said in a Facebook post Saturday morning.
“Phillips, who already shown willingness in playing for flag and country by joining Gilas Pilipinas Men in the 2023 Southeast Asian Games, is now eligible to play as a local in all FIBA tournaments,” he added.
The 6-foot-8 bruiser won the Finals Most Valuable Player in the UAAP Season 88 championship run of La Salle. He was also part of the season’s Elite Team, finishing second in the MVP race.
“It’s a blessing and a huge honor to officially be eligible to represent the Philippines. The opportunity to play for the national team is a longtime dream and an answered prayer! I’m beyond grateful to FIBA, the SBP, and everyone who supported this process,” the big man said, as quoted by the SBP.
“Handa na po akong lumaban para sa ating bansa! Ibibigay ko lahat ng kaya ko at ang buong puso ko! I cannot wait to compete alongside my fellow Filipinos as we continue pushing Philippine basketball forward. Para sa Bayan!”
Phillips joins a loaded frontcourt for Gilas, which already boasts 6-foot-8 Carl Tamayo, 6-foot-10 June Mar Fajardo, 6-foot-10 AJ Edu, 6-foot-10 Quentin Millora-Brown and 7-foot-3 Kai Sotto.
