Tabuena's risk pays off with full-time 2026 LIV Golf status

MANILA, Philippines — Even before he could unleash his opening drive in his second LIV Golf League appearance in Adelaide, Miguel Tabuena had already emerged a winner.
On the eve of the tournament, Tabuena proudly announced that he had secured full-time status for the entire 2026 LIV Golf season, becoming the first Filipino to earn such distinction — a stunning rise for a player who began the year as a reserve with no guarantees.
“This week at Adelaide, I am no longer teeing up as a reserve, but as a wildcard for the entire LIV Golf 2026 season,” Tabuena shared on Instagram. “I’m grateful and ready.”
The journey to that declaration was anything but certain.
After falling agonizingly short of securing an outright LIV berth through the Asian Tour International Series standings, Tabuena made a bold decision. He skipped an Asian Tour event at home — a safer and more predictable route — to take a gamble on a reserve role in the LIV Golf League’s season-opening event in Saudi Arabia.
It was a risk that could have easily backfired.
Reserves in LIV Golf travel with teams but have no assurance of actually competing. Opportunities depend on last-minute withdrawals or roster changes. Yet Tabuena bet on himself — and on the possibility that preparation would meet opportunity.
Fate intervened.
Tapped as a reserve for the 4Aces Golf Club captained by two-time major champion Dustin Johnson, Tabuena was called into action in Riyadh. He delivered a steady performance, contributing to the team’s third-place finish with a six-under total in the $20 million, 72-hole no-cut event.
While he struggled in the individual standings, finishing tied for 48th in a field of 57, the experience proved invaluable. He had shown he could hold his own on one of golf’s most lucrative and star-studded stages.
However, the path remained uncertain. For the next LIV stop in Adelaide, the 4Aces opted for Anthony Kim, who had tied for 22nd in Riyadh. Tabuena once again found himself on the outside looking in.
But the door did not close.
Instead, it opened wider.
With a wildcard slot available — and Tabuena’s credentials as an International Series Philippines champion and third-place finisher in the Asian Tour Order of Merit speaking for themselves — he was awarded full-season status for 2026.
Luigi Tabuena, Miguel’s father and lifelong mentor, summed up the emotional rollercoaster.
“Reserves have no guarantee they will be fielded,” Luigi explained. “But as fate would have it, (Patrick) Reed left, and the 4Aces needed someone. DJ asked Miguel if he wanted to fill the slot — no guarantee for any other tournament.”
“When the 4Aces signed Kim, a wildcard position became available. Since Miguel won the International Series Philippines and finished third in the Order of Merit, it was a natural fit.”
For Miguel, the breakthrough was both humbling and affirming.
“Thank you, Lord, for this incredible opportunity to play with the very best in the world,” he said.
From being a hopeful reserve to becoming a full-season competitor, Tabuena’s leap represents more than just career advancement — it is the realization of a long pursuit. Guided by his father from his earliest days gripping a golf club, through junior tournaments, amateur competitions and a professional career highlighted by two Philippine Open titles, Tabuena has steadily climbed the ladder of international golf.
Now he stands on one of the sport’s grandest platforms.
The 2026 LIV Golf schedule is daunting: from Australia, the tour moves to Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa, Mexico, Washington D.C., Spain, Louisiana, Great Britain, New Jersey, and finally to Saint John’s in the United States.
It is a demanding global circuit filled with elite talent and immense expectations.
But for Tabuena, the journey from gamble to guarantee has already proven one thing — he belongs.
The stakes are higher. The spotlight is brighter. The competition is fiercer.
Yet the opportunity is priceless — not just for potential winnings, but for the experience, exposure and the chance to represent the Philippines on one of golf’s most prominent stages.
From taking a risk with no safety net to securing a full-season berth, Tabuena didn’t just win a spot.
He won tenfold.
