Cignal chemistry on full display in third straight PVL win

MANILA, Philippines — There’s a reason Cignal went for chemistry and familiarity instead of star power.
It was in full display Tuesday at the Mall of Asia Arena after the Super Spikers pulled the rug from under a souped-up Farm Fresh side, 25-17, 26-24, 20-25, 30-28, to stay unshakeable atop the PVL All-Filipino Conference standings.
The Manny V. Pangilinan stuck with their gold guns rather than going on a free agent-recruiting spree and Vannie Gandler, an Alas Pilipinas standout, and Erika Santos, the PVL on Tour MVP, reciprocated by uncorking 25 and 15 points, respectively.
That propelled Cignal to their third straight win that firmed up its iron grip of the solo lead.
“We know we have a chance if we work harder and keep believing in ourselves,” said Cignal coach Shaq delos Santos.
Trisha Tubu, a remnant of Farm Fresh original team, led the way with 19 points while Ces Molina, who was acquired late last year, contributed 18 hits.
The Foxies did get the production from their marquee recruits in Royse Tubino, picked up from Choco Mucho who dropped 14, and Mylene Paat, taken from Chery Tiggo who sneaked in seven.
But they were just no-match against Gandler and Santos, who delivered the most decisive blows.
Farm Fresh did have its chances, including one when it came a point away from taking the fourth set and forcing a decider when it led, 24-22.
But the Foxies just couldn’t get over the hill as Cignal had all the answers in the end.
Farm Fresh dropped to 0-2.
