Fil-Am kicker makes super bowl history

MANILA, Philippines — “Pinoy Power” at Super Bowl LX.

Shining at the NFL’s grandest stage, Fil-Am kicker Jason Myers delivered a record-smashing performance as he helped the Seattle Seahawks win the Lombardi Trophy via a 29-13 romp over the New England Patriots yesterday in Santa Clara, California.

Myers, whose late great grandfather was a Filipino who served in the US Navy and made his way to Pensacola, Florida, carved his name in history by producing a Super Bowl-record five field goals, which helped Seattle pull away to its second championship.

The 34-year-old connected on kicks of 33, 39, 41 (twice) and 26 yards to shatter the old standard of four in football’s prestigious championship game, with his 17 total points now standing as the most scored by a kicker in Super Bowl history. Along the way, he became the first player ever to score 200 points in one season, counting the playoffs, setting a new high in total points in place of the 198 previously set by LaDainian Tomlinson in 2006.

Though Myers didn’t win the Super Bowl MVP honors, his brilliant exploits drew raves from both teammates and NFL fans online.

“He’s elite,” holder and punter Michael Dickson said of the Fil-Am in a report by the Associated Press. “The attention that goes into the detail with him, it’s really cool to see, and it pays off. And he’s cool to be around. ... He’s got that mentality, and it’s really cool to share this experience with him.”

While Myers did the heavy lifting scoring-wise, the Seahawks’ “Dark Side” defense worked wonders for the franchise.

Devon Witherspoon, Derick Hall, Byron Murphy and the rest of Mike Macdonald’s ferocious unit pummeled Drake Maye.
