MANILA, Philippines — Janelle Mae Frayna and Ruelle Canino battled to a 29-move standoff of a Slav showdown and stayed in the top two after eight rounds of the Philippine National Women’s Chess Championship in Malolos, Bulacan yesterday.
Canino took advantage of the opening misstep by Frayna and created a dangerous minor piece attack that had the former sacrificing her queen for two rooks for back-ranked breakthrough.
