MANILA, Philippines -- There’s nowhere to go but up for the Galeries Tower Highrisers.
And up the young, rebuilt franchise went after posting its first victory in almost a year at the expense of ZUS Coffee, 25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 22-25, 15-10, on Saturday that set it on the right path in the PVL All-Filipino Conference at the Ynares Center Montalban.
“Of course, we’re so happy we got the win because we’ve been through a lot with so many changes, a new team, coaches, system,” said ZUS captain Julia Coronel.
“Our hard work paid off,” added the Alas Pilipinas setter.
The win ended a string of 17 straight defeats that started after it shocked Cignal on February 27 of last year.
Interestingly, that stunning result catapulted Galeries Tower to its breakthrough quarterfinal appearance.
It was all down hill from there.
But good things come to those who wait as the Highrisers finally emerged from the ashes after revamping their old roster and acquiring a new coach in Clarence Esteban.
Gayle Pascual, formerly of ZUS, erupted for 18 points, the same output delivered by Erika Deloria while Aiza Pontillas and Jean Asis chipped in 11 and 10 hits, respectively.
It was the second straight defeat for the Thunderbelles.
