Team Liquid, Aurora Gaming PH advance to M7 KO stage
MANILA, Philippines — Philippine representatives Team Liquid and Aurora Gaming PH have secured their spots in the M7 World Championship knockout stage after posting a 3-1 record in the Swiss stage.
Team Liquid had been on the brink of a perfect Swiss Stage campaign after taking down Aurora Gaming PH and Team Falcons. But the team soon saw its win streak broken since ruling the Philippine professional league, as Malaysia's Selangor Red Giants (SRG) survived a thrilling 1-2 series to deny the Cavalry their early knockout stage spot.
The loss didn't weigh heavily on Team Liquid, however, as it quickly bounced back, sweeping Myanmar's Yangon Galacticos to finally extend its winning run in the tournament.
For the country's second seed, Aurora Gaming PH started slow, losing the all-Filipino first round Swiss stage to Team Liquid. But the gears shifted as it booked three straight match wins, taking down Cambodia's CFU Gaming, Mongolia and Wild Card winner Team Zone and Continental Champions Team Spirit, to move on to the knockout stage.
It was a huge sigh of relief for the Northern Lights as they had failed to advance in last year's M6, having been eliminated in the fourth round with a 1-3 standing.
Both Team Liquid and Aurora Gaming PH await the final rounds of the Swiss stage to see who they will be drawn against for the double-elimination knockout stage set to begin on January 18.
