TAT in Isabela: purposeful homecoming
CITY OF ILAGAN, Isabela – The 2025 Asian Tournament (TAT) Winter Classic officially opens today in this city, marking one of the biggest international sporting events ever hosted in the province. Eight new and familiar powerhouse teams from across Asia and the Philippines are set to compete, bringing world-class basketball action to Isabela’s sports fans. After typhoon Uwan cancelled the Pangasinan leg last month, Ilagan graciously accepted the challenge of hosting the games.
Participating teams include the Macau Black Bears, Hong Kong Vantablack Dragons, Guangdong Daifutang, perennial finalists Aces, Cool Masters, Sirius Star Filipinas, Caloocan Supremos, and the home team, the Ilagan Isabela Cowboys. The local teams have their work cut out for them, as most of the visiting squads carry vastly experienced internationalist imports of intimidating size.
Instrumental in bringing the Winter Classic to the City of Ilagan is Nori Uy, the visionary managing director of Nudge Productions and TAT production head. Nudge Productions has propelled various new leagues to prominence online, including the fledgling National Developmental Sports League. Uy hails from Gamu, a stone’s throw from Ilagan. He takes great personal pride from his deep desire to give back to the community where he grew up.
Uy told The Star that it has long been his dream to bring major regional and international sports events to Isabela. The spanking new The Capital Arena provides a fitting venue for such tournaments. For Nori, the Winter Classic is not only a showcase of high-level competition, but also a comprehensive opportunity to uplift local sports tourism, empower young athletes, and highlight Isabela as an emerging destination for major athletic events.
“This tournament is more than just basketball - it’s about inspiring the next generation of Isabeleño athletes and showing that world-class events can happen right here at home,” Uy told this writer. “I pray that this is the start of great things for the province. It’s the fulfillment of a cherished dream of mine.”
Local officials praised the initiative, noting the economic and cultural benefits that the Winter Classic brings to the province as well as the region. The event is expected to boost local businesses, attract visitors, and spark renewed interest in sports development programs across the province. The hope is to stimulate more rapid growth to interest more business, and have big sports organizations take a second look at this warm, progressive city.
As the games tip off, the excitement builds among fans eager to witness intense competition, standout performances, and the pride of seeing Ilagan on the international basketball map. And what it took was a pure, sincere vision that lights a fire in the hearts of the like-minded.
