UP vs DLSU: The trilogy is on

MANILA, Philippines — It’s La Salle vs University of the Philippines for the UAAP basketball crown after all.
The Green Archers arranged a trilogy with the Fighting Maroons by eking out a 78-73 win over the top-ranked National U Bulldogs in the sudden death Game 2 of the UAAP Season 88 men’s basketball Final Four at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Jacob Cortez sizzled once again before more than 12,000 fans yesterday, hitting the go-ahead bucket in the last 56
seconds for a career-best 29 points. In the process, the Green Archers wiped out the twice-to-beat incentive of the Bulldogs, who dominated the two-round eliminations including a sweep of La Salle.
La Salle came out as an entirely different beast in the big stage, flaunting its veteran pedigree with two straight do-or-die wins for another shot at title holder UP starting on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena for the best-of-three titular showdown.
La Salle also became only the third fourth-seed in the Final Four era to make it to the finals.
La Salle and UP will have some score to settle after splitting the UAAP crown in the last two seasons. The Green Archers won Season 86 while the Maroons completed a revenge tour last season, paving the way for an epic third finale as the undisputed best collegiate programs in the archipelago today.
“If we’re gonna define how our season went, it’s something that we’re grateful for. It’s a testament to our character. The biggest thing in this challenge season is faith. The players showed up and manned up, especially in the second half,” said coach Topex Robinson, who has now made it to the finals in all of his three seasons in Taft so far.
“We’re happy to be here. We’re happy to be in the finals. When everyone was doubting us, it just motivated us not to prove anything to anyone but to prove ourselves. It’s always been about our faith.”
La Salle could not have picked a better time to showcase that fortitude with its back against the wall, amid a near Final Four miss, a crippled crew and a shaky campaign in a new era without two-time UAAP MVP Kevin Quiambao.
And it took a village for La Salle to do it, featuring Earl Abadam and Vhoris Marasigan who chipped in 14 and 10 points, respectively to backstop Cortez. JC Macalalag added eight points before his back injury in the waning seconds as team captain Mike Phillips stamped an all-around brilliance of eight points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Kean Baclaan and Mason Amos, who just returned from MCL injuries that hurt La Salle midway through the tourney to nearly miss out the playoff bus, settled for four and three points, respectively, but the Green Archers’ depth proved just too much to handle for the Bulldogs.
In women’s basketball, NU proved why it’s the reigning champion by taking Game 1 against the previously unbeaten and outright finalist Santo Tomas, 84-79, to move closer to back-to-back titles and ninth crown in the last 10 seasons.
