Teener chases F1 dream

SPORTING CHANCE - Joaquin M. Henson - The Philippine Star

Its a dream thats at the end of the rainbow but Fil-Aussie-British racer Kai Ballecer Veitch, 15, is taking the long, winding road to F1 one step at a time. No rush, no fuss. The goal is clear and with his parentsfull support, Kai is driving the pathway that hes carved for himself, knowing the journey is tough but working hard is the key to success.

Kais father Paul said the love for racing started at an early age. “Kai first drove a kart when he was four,” recounted Paul. “He initially raced in the UK where he was born and raised and later competed across Europe as he moved through the junior categories. Kai began karting properly when he was 11. This season, he stepped into Senior Rotax which placed him against adult drivers for the first time and helped accelerate his development as a young athlete.”

Kai is proud of his mixed ethnic roots and it shows in the way his helmet carries the Filipino sun alongside the Australian southern cross and the UK flag. “Hes proud of that identity and motivated to represent it well, especially in a sport where Filipinos are only beginning to emerge,” continued Paul. “Kais mother is Joanne Ballecer from both Manila and Laoag. His maternal grandmothers family name is Jaramillo and his great-grandfather was Florentino Ballecer, an actor during the early years of Philippine cinema. That part of the family history means a great deal to Kai. It has helped him understand the depth of his Filipino heritage and the creative legacy that runs through the family. Kai spent a lot of time with his Filipino grandparents in the US which is where much of his cultural connection has grown. He visits Australia regularly where the wider Ballecer and Jaramillo families are based. Kais aware of Bianca Bustamantes progress and it has meant a great deal to him to see a Filipina competing in single seaters. Filipino representation in European motorsport is still very limited so seeing other Filipinos succeed has been inspiring for him.”

Last September, Kai marked a milestone in his racing career when he recovered from a morning DNF after the heats to clinch a podium finish at the prestigious Kartmasters British GP. He overtook three karts in the final lap into the 90-right corner to land on the dais. A few weeks ago, Kai placed eighth in the final of the Ginetta Junior Winter Cup, his first competitive car race, in Silverstone after three days of testing. “Kai is preparing for a move into Formula 4 next year and continues his full-time studies through Minerva Virtual Academy, allowing him to train and compete across Europe without stepping back from education,” said Paul.

Kai said his ultimate goal is racing in F1 someday. “But I’m focused on each step,” he said. “F4 first then consistency and learning. Moving into seniors at 14 was intense. You learn quickly that nobody gives you space. You have to earn it. Kartmasters changed everything. After the DNF, I just stopped overthinking. I trusted what (coach/mechanic) Aiden (Neate) and I had talked about and went for every gap that made sense.”

In a recent Australian press story, writer Julian Linden quoted Paul as saying, “My philosophical view is it’s worse to tell someone they can’t achieve their dream than to blunt that dream…to go for it and realize there are risks in life.” In the same article, Kai said, “if you’re tense or nervous, you’re just going to make mistakes or just let people pass…if you’re just enjoying it, you’re going to perform the best you can and be relaxed in the car and get the most out of everything…you can’t think about crashing, otherwise you’ll crash…I’ve been in a hospital, I’ve flipped, I had the worst I can have so it’s not gonna get worse…I’ve always liked racing since I was a baby…it’s just the speed of it and the excitement.” Kai is truly living his dream.
