MANILA, Philippines — ZUS Coffee knew it would take a dose of something to ease the pain of suffering its first defeat in the PVL Reinforced Conference.
It came via a quick, merciless, 25-13, 25-21, 25-21, win over the Nxled Chameleons at the Ynares Center Montalban Tuesday that not only diminished the sting, but also got the Thunderbelles back on their feet.
“It was a good win for us. It got our confidence back and that’s the most important thing,” said ZUS’ prolific spiker Anna DeBeer, who unloaded a 16-point effort she laced with 13 spikes.
The win, its seventh in eight outings, momentarily gave the solo lead back to ZUS, which absorbed its first setback at the hands of Cignal, 25-12, 26-24, 25-23, last Thursday, November 13, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
But there’s a chance it could still lose it as PLDT and Farm Fresh, both possessing identical 6-1 marks, could surpass the former if the latter two could hurdle their final elimination round assignments Thursday, November 20, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
But whatever happens, it assured the Thunderbelles of at least a top three finish entering the quarterfinals that will pit the No. 1 team with No. 8, No. 2 with No. 7, No. 3 with No. 6 and No. 4 with No. 5 in a brutal knockout format.
And DeBeer said this win served as a warning signal to whichever squad they face in the quarters.
“It’s a fresh start and nothing else matters. Our team is definitely ready,” said DeBeer.
Nxled closed out its campaign with a 0-7 card.
In the second game, Choco Mucho pulled down Akari, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 25-21, and salvaged some measure of pride by finishing with a 3-5 slate.
The Chargers dropped to 4-4.
