Go, Ramos make weekend cut in Taiwan Open

MANILA, Philippines — Lloyd Go and Sean Ramos turned in contrasting rounds to make it to the weekend of the Taiwan Open, though both remained well behind hometown favorite Hung Chien-yao at the halfway mark of the Asian Tour event Friday at the Taifong Golf Club.
Go fired a two-under-par 70 built on six birdies against four bogeys, while Ramos carded a two-birdie, two-bogey card for a 72. The Filipino bets finished the first two rounds at matching 142s for a share of 23rd place — 12 shots adrift of Hung, who threatened to run away with the tournament after a blistering 14-under 130 total on back-to-back 65s.
Using his intimate knowledge of the par-72 layout, Hung birdied his first three holes and added four more coming home, complementing a pair of crucial par saves in a two-day display of precision and power. He had opened with eight birdies on Thursday, erasing the impact of his lone bogey in the event so far to build a commanding five-stroke cushion over Thailand’s Poosit Supupramai, who stood at 135 after a second-round 68.
Five players shared third at 138, including Ekpharit Wu, who torched the course with a 66.
Go, prepping for next week’s Philippine Golf Tour stop at Valley Golf, struggled from tee to green, hitting just seven fairways and 10 greens. But he made up for it with a hot putter, needing only 26 putts to advance.
Ramos, who opened with an eagle-aided 70 Thursday, also battled inconsistency off the tee, missing 10 fairways. He reached regulation 11 times and took 29 putts in assembling back-to-back 36s.
Justin Quiban bounced back from a 75 with a 71 to safely squeeze into the weekend at 146 in the $400,000 championship.
