MPL PH: Team Falcons defies odds to take last playoff spot
MANILA, Philippines — Team Falcons Philippines shook the final standings of the Mobile Legends Professional League (MPL) Philippines Season 16 as it not only brought itself out of last place but also secured the final playoff spot after finishing the regular season as the sixth seed.
After winning all of its matches in Week Seven, Team Falcons Philippines only had one more match left — against reigning champions Team Liquid Philippines. It was an important series for both teams, not only because it was do or die for Falcons, but also because a win secures an upper bracket advantage for Liquid.
In the end, the series lived up to the billing as Team Falcons Philippines survived Team Liquid Philippines, 2-1, to stay alive and book a playoff spot.
As the regular season concluded, Aurora Gaming remained on top, taking a 13-game win streak, defeating its final two opponents in AP Bren and Smart Omega. Though both tied at nine points, ONIC Philippines took the second seed over Team Liquid Philippines due to their match head-to-head.
Twisted Minds finally snapped its losing streak in fashion, surviving TNC Pro Team, 2-1, to secure a playoff spot. Meanwhile the Phoenix Army, though losing all their matches during the final week, booked their ticket to the playoffs as the fifth seed.
Having lost both their matches over the weekend, AP Bren and Smart Omega bid farewell to the tournament, being eliminated as the seventh and eight seeds, respectively, after the regular season.
MPL Philippines will take a 10-day break in preparation for the playoffs, moving venues to the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City beginning October 22.
