‘Thrilla’ draws major boost

Alexis Romero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang has ordered all government agencies to support the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of “Thrilla in Manila,” the historic bout between boxing legends Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier that took place on Oct. 1, 1975 at the Araneta Coliseum.

In a memorandum dated Sept. 23, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin called the boxing match “a sporting and cultural milestone that brought global recognition to the Philippines.”

“The success of the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Thrilla in Manila requires the active participation of all concerned government agencies and instrumentalities, as well as the support of local government units and the private sector,” the memorandum read.

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) was tasked to lead the celebration of the golden anniversary of the bout on Oct. 26 to 31 and identify programs, activities and projects for the event.

All government agencies and instrumentalities, including government-owned or controlled corporations were directed while all local governments, non-government organizations, and the private sector were encouraged to support and to extend assistance to the PSC.

President Marcos expressed “all-out support” for the upcoming celebration of the “Thrilla in Manila” anniversary during the courtesy call of boxing icon and former senator Manny Pacquiao at Malacañang last month.

An event commemorating the “Thrilla in Manila” anniversary will be presented by Pacquiao’s promotional company MP Promotions next month.
