Journalist seeks NBI help vs deepfake

MANILA, Philippines — Broadcast journalist Migs Bustos on Wednesday ran to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) after discovering that he had fallen victim to identity theft.
Bustos, of broadcast network ABS-CBN, said he received a message indicating that a love scammer had used his likeness to collect $200,000 or roughly P11.5 million from an unsuspecting victim.
“I am not soliciting money from anyone,” Bustos told reporters at the NBI office in Pasay. “This incident will happen again if we don’t push back against these scammers.”
NBI Director Jaime Santiago said prominent figures – politicians, celebrities and journalists – are often targets of online identity theft.
“Scammers exploit famous personalities to manipulate others who easily fall into their traps, resulting in stealing money from them,” Santiago said.
He forwarded Bustos’ complaint to the NBI cybercrime division for action.
