MANILA, Philippines — With two gold and two bronze medals, the Philippines ranked 26th on the medal chart at the 2024 Paris Olympics as of Friday, with Indonesia trailing closely with three medals.

Carlos Yulo's double gold in artistic gymnastics earlier this week catapulted the country 10 places up the chart, from 31st to 21st, before boxers Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas's bronze finishes placed it at 24th on Thursday.

That was when athletes from the tiny Carribean country of Cuba earned gold mints in boxing and wrestling. Spain also advanced past the Philippines on Thursday after getting gold ones in athletics and sailing.

Earlier on Friday, Azerbaijan's judo team and Iran's wrestling team also secured Olympic golds, overtaking the Philippines and dropping it from 24th to 26th place.

The standings are based on gold medals before silver and bronze awards are counted. So while the Philippines is tied to several other teams that also have two golds, it is outranked in the tally of silver and bronze medals.

Southeast Asia. While the Philippines maintained its Southeast Asian leadership in Paris as of Friday, Indonesia outpaced Thailand in the rankings and emerged from the bottom of the medal chart to the 25th spot. It was thanks to Indonesian male speed climber Veddriq Leonardo and weightlifter Rizki Juniansyah in the 73-kg division who secured gold medals on Thursday.

Countries and teams ranked 21st to 30th at the Paris Olympics as of Friday morning, Aug. 9, 2024 (Manila time).

The Philippines is not yet out of additional medal hopes at the Olympics, however, with three more athletes in competition.

Golfer Bianca Pagdanganan became a frontrunner overnight (Manila time) at Le Golf National in Paris. Teammate Dottie Ardina also had a decent game with a four-over 76 as Yuka Saso of Japan struggled.

Vanessa Sarno is also set to compete in the women's 71-kg division in weighlifting on Satuday.

Leaders of the board. At the top of the list, meanwhile, is still the United States with 30 gold medals and 103 medals in total. It sent 592 athletes to Paris to play in 34 sporting competitions.

Ranked second, China is one gold medal behind the U.S. with 29. Its huge Olympic contingent of 388 competitors in 33 sports has 73 total medals so far.
