Potential LIV hosting in Philippines: More than just golf

MANILA, Philippines – LIV Golf chief Greg Norman recently highlighted the Philippines’ keen interest in potentially hosting the Saudi-backed circuit in the future. And this was particularly notable following an inspection of four of the country’s esteemed championship courses.

With a confident grin, Norman expressed his enthusiasm about the prospect, emphasizing the Philippines’ burgeoning golf scene and its potential as a tourist and entertainment hub.

“The Philippines is very keen to get us there,” said Norman in an interview with the Business of Sports Newsletter, his words echoing across the golfing community like a clarion call.

But Norman’s vision extended far beyond the fairways and greens. He spoke of golf not merely as a game but as a catalyst for tourism and entertainment, a gateway to showcasing the rich tapestry of Filipino culture.

“Golf in the Philippines is doing very well,” he remarked, acknowledging its growing prominence on the global stage.

As he delved deeper into his plans, Norman painted a vivid picture of what hosting an LIV Golf event would entail. It wasn’t just about the swings and putts, it was about immersing oneself in an unforgettable experience that transcended sport alone.

“We are not just sport; we’re sports, entertainment and culture,” he emphasized. “So, no matter where we go in the world, we adjust what we need to deliver from an entertainment standpoint.”

For Norman, it was more than just another tournament, it was an opportunity to leave an indelible mark, to showcase the Philippines not just as a top golfing destination but as a beacon of hospitality and entertainment.

Norman and his team conducted a thorough inspection of the Sta. Elena Golf Club, The Country Club, Manila Southwoods and Wack Wack’s  East course. While LIV Golf has yet to confirm the selection of these venues officially, insiders suggest that Norman’s visit was meticulously planned and executed.

Among the four courses, the TCC, Southwoods’ Masters course and Wack Wack’s East have a rich history of hosting prestigious tournaments, including the Philippine Open and Asian Tour events. Additionally, Sta. Elena Golf Club and Manila Southwoods co-staged the 1996 World Amateur Golf Team Championships, further underscoring their pedigree.

LIV Golf’s innovative format, which includes team competition, shotgun starts and guaranteed prize money through signing contracts, aims to enhance fan engagement and inject fresh excitement into the sport.
