MANILA, Philippines —  Rogelio JayR Esquivel made history, becoming the first Filipino surfer to qualify for the WSL’s World Longboard Championships following a fourth-place showing in El Sunzal, La Libertad, El Salvador.

With his impeccable footwork in smooth-styled surfing, the San Juan, La Union pride drew a total of 14,150 points and fifth ranking that fulfilled his dream of securing a spot in the world meet in Malibu, California.

Esquivel acknowledged the overwhelming support of the Filipino community, saying: “It pushed me to do more, to keep improving, it’s amazing to feel their support.”

The World Surf League’s top 8 surfers will clash in Malibu on October 3-13.
