LOS ANGELES – Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards has been cited for third-degree assault by Denver police, who say he swung a chair and injured two women after the team's NBA playoff run ended with a loss to the Nuggets.

"We are aware of the alleged incident regarding Anthony Edwards following Game 5 in Denver and are in the process of gathering more information," the Timberwolves said in a statement on Wednesday (Thursday, Manila time), a day after the Nuggets' series-clinching win. "We have no further comment at this moment."

Edwards missed a potential game-tying shot at the buzzer on Tuesday night and stormed off the court, with television footage appearing to show him slamming a chair down as he headed toward the locker room.

Jay Casillas, spokesperson for the Denver Police Department, said Edwards swung a folding chair that hit two female employees, who both suffered minor injuries.

Edwards is due to appear in court on June 9 in Denver, according to the citation.

Colorado law defines third-degree assault as knowingly, recklessly, or with criminal negligence, inflicting bodily injury on another person.

The charge is a misdemeanor and could result in jail time and a fine of up to $1,000.
