Delarmino strikes
MANILA, Philippines — Philip Delarmino added his name to the list of world champions the country has produced this year after he ruled the featherweight division of the International Federation of Muay Thai Association (IFMA) World Championships in Phuket, Thailand yesterday.
The 31-year-old Southeast Asian Games gold medalist trounced Aleksander Abramov of Russia, 30-27, to claim the gold in the 57-kilogram senior elite male category.
It earned Delarmino, a native of Dumangas in Iloilo, a spot to the World Games 2022 in Birmingham, Alabama.
The feat put Delarmino, who also topped an Asian meet in Dubai last June, in an elite group of Filipino world-beaters that included weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, who delivered the country’s breakthrough Olympic gold medal in the Tokyo Games, and gymnast Caloy Yulo, who captured the vault gold in the World Championships in Japan in October.
Islay Erika Bomogao and Rudzma Abubakar claimed a bronze each in the Under-23 female elite 45kg class and U23 female elite 48kg section, respectively.
