Philippine athletes receive ‘ayuda’ in Tokyo

MANILA, Philippines — Filipino athletes were among those who gladly lined up for some wonderful gifts upon arrival at the Olympic Village.

All Olympic athletes were presented a Samsung S21 5G, a top-of-the-line Android phone, plus a pair of air pods from Japanese organizers.

“Galing kami para kumuha ng ayuda,” said Nesthy Petecio, accompanied by fellow boxers Eumir Marcial and Carlo Paalam, from a video she posted on her Facebook account.

That is apart from the iPhone and some items like Olympics-inspired tumblers and face masks from the Manny V. Pangilinan Sports Foundation (MVPSF) that will be provided to the 19 Filipinos competing in this quadrennial event.

The MVPSF gifts came with a message from no less than its chairman Manny V. Pangilinan and president Al Panlilio.

“Thank you for the sacrifice and dedication you have given our country and for making all of us proud,” the officials said. “We are in need of inspiration more than ever and you are a beacon of hope amidst these challenging times.

“On behalf of Smart Communications and the MVPSF, please accept this token gift as you represent the Philippines with pride, honor and integrity.

“We are with you all the way,” the two added.

And of course, Filipino athletes could pocket more, in the millions of pesos, if they strike gold in Tokyo.

A gold medal, as of today, is worth P33 million and a house and lot in Tagaytay City.
