New PRFU chief looking to restart rugby activities

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Rugby Football Union installed Ada Milby as its new president during its annual general meeting and elections via Zoom recently.

Milby took over from Rick Santos, who has reached the maximum term of eight continuous years. Santos retained his seat at the board of trustees and was elected secretary general.

A Lady Volcanoes stalwart and Asia Rugby executive committee and World Rugby Council member, Milby said resuming rugby in a COVID-19 environment will be her initial order of business.

“Our first priority will be to restart activities when restrictions lift with player welfare and community safety as the primary focus,” said the PRFU chief, who stressed the union has devised a “very robust return to play protocol” in line with the best practices globally and IATF guidelines.

Milby also underscored the importance of getting the Volcanoes and Lady Volcanoes back to training in 2021 in preparation for top-level Asia Rugby Sevens competitions.

“From the success of the gold and silver medal performances in the 2019 SEAG, we want to ensure that we don’t lose the forward momentum of those programs,” said Milby.

“It’s a challenging time for all sports in the Philippines and we’re very thankful for the continued support of the POC, PSC and all our sponsors and stakeholders.”
