Asaytono recovering from heart attack

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — PBA commissioner Willie Marcial promised assistance to league great Nelson Asaytono as he recovers from a heart attack he suffered during the Holy Week.

“Tutulong kami,” said Marcial who was informed of the condition of “The Bull” Saturday night.

“Pati yung mga legends, nag-usap na rin sila na tutulong kay Nelson,” he added, referring to Asaytono’s fellow retired ballers who regularly get together for charity games here and abroad to raise funds for fellow former players in need.

Asaytono, a seven-time PBA champion, was rushed to a hospital in General Trias, Cavite last Tuesday after suffering a heart attack.

He was confined for five days and was discharged the other day.  The former University of Manila standout is now recuperating at home.

Marcial learned of Asaytono’s ailment from NLEX assistant vice president Ronald Dulatre, who regularly plays with the former Purefoods, Swift, San Miguel, and Red Bull star along with Vice Mayor Maurito Sison, who assisted Asaytono during his confinement.

“Ina-arrange na natin paano maipapaabot yung tulong ng PBA kasi nga naka ECQ (enhanced community quarantine) pa tayo,” said Marcial.

The No. 2 pick overall in the 1989 rookie draft, Asaytano played 17 seasons in the PBA. The premier power forward contended for the coveted MVP twice and made it to the Mythical First Team thrice and Mythical Second Team four times. He won Best Player of the Conference honors twice and was voted into the All Stars 10 times.
