MANILA, Philippines — The NCAA Policy Board yesterday decided to cancel the rest of the sports calendared for Season 95 for good to ensure the safety of the athletes, students, fans and officials amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

It also hinted at considering adding eligibility years to senior athletes whose sports were included in the cancellation of the rest of the season.

“The NCAA has announced through Policy Board of Season 95 president Francisco Cayco of season host Arellano University that the NCAA Season 95 is terminated,” said the league in a statement yesterday.

Among the sports cancelled were volleyball, football, beach volleyball, athletics, lawn and soft tennis and cheerleading.

“This was arrived at after consulting the Policy Board members. First and foremost that was considered was the safety of the athletes, students, fans and officials,” it added.

The league was able to hold events in basketball, chess, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and demo sport 3x3 basketball before the outbreak of the disease.

But the league is considering adding eligibility years to athletes whose sports were cancelled although the matter will be discussed at a proper time.

“Eligibility matters of athletes being raised shall be discussed later,” it added.

COVID-19 has virtually put the world at a standstill with cases now up to 219,357 with 8,970 deaths, including a record 475 in Italy in one day. More than 85,000 have recovered from the disease.
