Taduran fights behind enemy lines

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Filipino IBF minimumweight world champion Pedro Taduran sets out to overcome tremendous odds against tough Mexican challenger Daniel Valladares and a hostile crowd when he stakes his crown today (Manila time) in Guadalupe, Mexico.

The 23-year-old Taduran has sparred over 100 rounds since opening camp last November, determined to hurdle home boy Valladares and keep the IBF belt he won by stopping compatriot Samuel Salva last year.

“We know Valladares is a tough fighter and we’re fighting in his territory but Pedro will do everything to return home with the crown,” promoter Art Monis said.

Taduran (14-2-0, 11KOs) tipped the scales at 104.6 lbs during yesterday’s official weigh in while Valladares (22-1-0, 13KOs) weighed 103.8 lbs.

The Filipino champ and his entourage led by former IBF lightflyweight titlist and trainer Tacy Macalos and Monis had spent the last six days in Mexico.

Taduran’s camp is confident the pride of Libon, Albay, will take care of business in the duel at Jardin Cerveza Expo.

“We have studied the style of Valladares. He’s a counter-puncher like (Juan Manuel) Marquez. Pedro should be aggressive and go for body shots. If he wants to run, Pedro will chase him; if he wants to slug it out, Pedro will oblige. He’s ready for whatever style Valladares brings,” said Monis.
