Alab Pilipinas off to wobbly start in ABL

John Bryan Ulanday - The Philippine Star

MANILA,Philippines — The new-look San Miguel-Alab Pilipinas got a huge baptism of fire as it suffered a devastating 111-76 loss against home team Mono Vampire in the opening week of the 2019-2020 ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) season at the Stadium 29 in Nonthaburi, Thailand.

Parading a revamped roster following the departure of Ray Parks Jr. and Renaldo Balkman, Alab’s lack of chemistry was on display right off the bat as it got stunned with a quick 31-12 first- quarter deficit.

The Philippine representative never recovered from en route to a forgetabble 35-point debut loss.

Ex-PBA import Mike Singletary served as the biggest thorn on Alab’s side as he came through with 19 points, including 11 in Mono’s commanding first-quarter assault. He also added 11 rebounds and four assists.

Moses Morgan (16), Tyler Lamb (13), Ryan Atkins (13) and Chitchai Chantachon (10) shared the load with Singletary as the Thailand-based team got off to a rousing ABL start.

Nick King, who replaced Balkman, led the way for Alab with 21 markers despite a paltry 4-of-19 clip.

Louie Vigil (13) and Jordan Heading (12) were the only bright spots for Alab as ex-Mono Vampire Jason Brickman struggled in his Alab debut.

Brickman, a Fil-American, finished scoreless though he added two boards and four assists.

Alab veteran Lawrence Domingo also added 10 while the only other team mainstay in Brandon Rosser bled for just one point.

The Philippine representative tries to recover against the Macau Wolf Warriors on Nov. 27.
