Marinerong Pilipino returns with a bang

John Bryan Ulanday - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Marinerong Pilipino and Black Mamba prevailed over their respective counterparts to open their campaigns on a high note in the PBA Developmental League Foundation Cup yesterday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The returning Skippers rolled past Hazchem, 118-71, while the debuting Black Mamba Energy Drink erased an 18-point fourth- quarter deficit to frustrate Alberei Kings, 86-82.

All 12 players scored in a well-balanced Skippers’ attack with seven putting up double digits led by ex-pro Eliud Poligrates who logged in 19 points,  four rebounds, six assists and four steals.

William McAloney pumped in a 10-13 double-double on top of two swats while team captain and also former pro-cager Mark Yee added an efficient 10 markers and two steals in just six minutes of action.

“It’s a good start for us. We know it’s still early but I told the boys that as long as we stay healthy and complete, we have a good chance this conference,” said mentor Yong Garcia as his formidable squad comprised of standouts from other amateur leagues joined CEU on top of Group A with 1-0 cards.

After failing to participate last conference, the Skippers’ thirst was in full display right away after zooming to a 56-31 spread at the half. Marinerong Pilipino even stretched it to as many as 52 points (114-62) before settling for a still massive 47-point victory in their D-League comeback.
