MANILA, Philippines — ESPN5 Boxing and Gerrypens Promotions team up to stage a boxing tournament and reality show dubbed the Ultimate Boxing Series: “Kamaong Pinoy” to premiere next month on ESPN5.

A total of 20 up-and-coming professional boxers from different stables emerged from the tough qualifying phase to battle it out to become the first UBS champions.

Former world champ Gerry Peñalosa will supervise the boxers as they grind it out in a live, televised boxing event with the top two in each division making it to the undercard of the June 25 IBO flyweight title duel between Carlo Peñalosa and Mexican Maximino Flores in Manila.

“The country is really rich in talent and these 20 are the best of the best because most of them are unbeaten,” said Peñalosa during yesterday’s event launch at the Midas Hotel. “We hope we could produce the next Manny Pacquiao.”

TV5 president Chot Reyes, for his part, said they came up with this idea to let the Filipino audience be treated with not just the fights itself but also the real stories behind it.

“It’s similar to ‘Kwentong Gilas’ because our goal is to tell the story behind the story as well as the drama,” said Reyes.

Reyes and Peñalosa announced the initial bouts starting with the duel between Ronel Sumalpong and Ruben Dadivas.
