Magcalayos wrest control; Chabon, 2 others share lead
CANLUBANG, Philippines — Jolo Magcalayo fired a seven-under 65 in near-ideal conditions and pulled away early – six strokes ahead of elder brother Jonas – while three forged ahead in women’s play at the start of the W Express RVF Cup Amateur Golf Championship at Cangolf’s North course here yesterday.
Jolo rammmed in four birdies at the front and went ballistic anew at the back to outgun Aidric Chan and Korean Kim Tae Soo with a personal best 32-33 card.
Two flights behind, Jonas also came through with a solid frontside 33 but stumbled at the backside with a 38 for a 71. Chan and Zachary Castro matched par 72s for joint third.
A tight start ensued in the distaff side where one stroke separated the top players in the event sponsored by the MVP Sports Foundation and held as part of the PLDT Group National Amateur Tour.
Sofia Chabon, Junia Gabasa and Eagle Ace Superal all fired identical 37-38 cards for a one-shot lead over Rafaela Singson and Rianne Malixi.
Laia Barro submitted a 77, followed by Bernice Olivarez-Ilas and Samantha Dizon at 78, and Laurea Duque and Arnie Taguines at 79.
