Alab tramples CLS Knights to open ABL title defense

MANILA, Philippines – San Miguel Alab Pilipinas overpowered a visiting CLS Knights Indonesia, 94-67, to jumpstart its title-retention bid in the ASEAN Basketball League at the Sta. Rosa Multi-Purpose Sports Complex in Sta. Rosa, Laguna Sunday night.

Renaldo Balkman, who was a vital cog in last season’s successful championship run, picked up from where he left off and exploded for 33 points. He spiked his performance with 11 rebounds, three steals and three blocks as the Beermen posted their first win.

While Balkman will not be playing with last year’s other import, Justin Brownlee, his new partner, fellow Puerto Rican PJ Ramos, was just as competitive and finished with equally impressive numbers of 20 points, 13 boards and five dimes while serving as an anchor of Alab’s interior defense.

Bobby Ray Parks, the reigning local MVP, chipped in 10 points in handing the Knights their fourth defeat against a win.

“The key was establishing ourselves early through our defense,” said Alab coach Jimmy Alapag, whose charges led, 46-27, at the break and was in cruise control from there.

Alab’s new recruits — Brandon Rosser, Caelan Tiongson and Ethan Alvano — provided some impactful plays and should continue to do so in a season where the Beermen are the favorites to repeat as champions.

Alab and CLS will clash again on Sunday in Indonesia.
