Diliman Blue Dragons bring act to D-League

Kristina Villanueva - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Diliman College will show its wares on the bigger stage as it joins the PBA D-League.

The Blue Dragons were in the middle of a best-of-three battle for the Universities and Colleges Basketball League diadem against Olivarez College and had just taken  the opener when they bared their plans in a press conference at Gerry’s Grill in Quezon City Monday night.

“We are entering a new chapter of our sports program for basketball. I hope our school will be known because of this. We have a lot of talent, we have good students and the school offers good programs. We want to show that Diliman College could excel in sports,” said Diliman College coach and athletic director Renzy Bajar.

Though newcomers, the Blue Dragons must not be counted out, said Bajar, as they will be fielding in a competitive team which thrice ruled the Universiti Teknologi MARA International Sports Fiesta in Malaysia where they bested university teams from Bangkok, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Diliman College also took home the gold in the UCBL Summer Invitational Tournament last year, the 15th and 16th Fr. Martin’s Cup and the Republica Cup collegiate division this year.

“We have a fighting chance. This is a learning experience for us. If we beat the other teams, that’s better,” said Bajar.

Diliman College president and former Sen. Nikki Coseteng expressed her confidence in their team.

“We bring with us not just a ragtag team even if we are new. I have full confidence in our team and in our coach,” said Coseteng.
