Another draw stalls Gonzales, Frayna

MANILA, Philippines — Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales drew with India’s Katiyar Deepak to remain a full point off the solo leader GM Gadir Guseinov of Azerbaijan after five rounds of the 44th Vila De Sitges in Spain Tuesday night.

It was the second straight draw by the 49-year-old Gonzales, who split the point with another Indian Kartavya Anadkat Monday after hurdling Spain’s Bohigas Santasusagna and Ramon Montano in the first two rounds.

Gonzales, who finished fifth in Barbera del Valles and 15th in Sant Marti, has three points for joint fourth with 19 others.

Top seed Guseinov continued to show the way with four points.

Barely outside the top 20 with 2.5 points are Woman GM Janelle Mae Frayna and International Master John Marvin Miciano, who also halved the point with Spain’s Llibert Llaverias Cespedes and Sweden’s Torbjorn Glimbrant, respectively.
