MANILA, Philippines — With JP Calvo providing the firepower and leadership, Letran recovered from a numbing opening game setback to Perpetual Help with an 83-76 victory over San Sebastian in the early going of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament last Friday.
The veteran playmaker poured in 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting while controlling the Knights offense in the second half to anchor the team’s victory and bag the Chooks-To-Go/NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week honors.
“We help each other in the team,” Calvo said about leading the talented lineup of the Knights.
After yielding to the Altas, Letran coach Jeff Napa talked to Calvo and fellow veteran Bong Quinto and mapped out their plan on steering the team in the right direction.
“I talked to them and showed them the bigger picture. Good thing they responded, along with the rest of the team,” said Napa.
But Calvo deflected credit of his stellar play to his fellow Knights.
“In the end, I relied on my teammates,” said Calvo, who edged Quinto, Ian Alban and Levi Dela Cruz of Arellano, and Yankie Haruna of St. Benilde for the weekly player citation.
