Archers shoot down Maroons

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — La Salle showed great promise even on the exit of a number of key players, topping a highly fancied University of the Philippines, 82-79, in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.

Old hands Kib Montalbo, Andrei Caracut, Aljun Melecio and Justine Baltazar played well with new recruits Brandon Bates and Taane Samuels as the Archers got past the vastly improved UP side.

Baltazar top scored for the winning team with 16 points, with Samuel and Caracut contributing 12 and 11, respectively.

“The win was a bonus as we’re a work in progress,” said first-year DLSU coach Louie Gonzales.

“We have to find the 51 points that we lost,” added Gonzales, referring to the outputs of former Archers Ben Mbala, Ricci and Prince Rivero and Abu Tratter.

Ateneo spoiled the party of the debuting Gilas Pilipinas cadets with  a 75-69 victory in the second game.

Thirdy Ravena turned in a team-high 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and three blocks for the reigning UAAP champions.
