MANILA, Philippines – A new era awaits Philippine sports.
Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines chief Ricky Vargas unseated Peping Cojuangco in the highly anticipated Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) elections at the Wack Wack Country Club in San Juan on Friday.
Vargas secured 24 votes while Cojuangco earned 15, ending the latter’s 13-year reign. The former becomes the ninth head of the country’s Olympic body.
Cojuangco served as POC chief since 2004 and was eyeing a fourth term at today’s polls.
Meanwhile, cycling president Rep. Abraham Tolentino, who belongs to Vargas’ ticket, bested table tennis’ Ting Ledesma for the POC chairmanship.
