,MANILA, Philippines — Far Eastern University head coach George Pascua will celebrate his birthday tomorrow.
And the Lady Tamaraws gave him the perfect gift—a hard-earned victory just as the tournament began.
FEU registered their first opening day victory since Season 74 after outlasting the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles 19-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 15-9, in the UAAP women's volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, Sunday.
Almost botching their opening game after trailing in the fifth set 1-6, FEU unleashed a mean 14-3 blitz and rode on the heroic serves of Chin-chin Basas to hack out a win.
"Sabi ko hindi naman natatapos ang volleyball ng 6-1 so keep on fighting lang," Pascua told reporters.
"'Yung maturity, kilala ko naman players ko eh pagdating sa maturity. Pagdating sa ganon alam nila kung paano i-handle kasi ine-ensayo naman namin yun kaya confident ako na kakayanin nila," he said.
Team captain Bernadeth Pons said the win is extra special since it's her first opening-day victory with FEU, and it also snapped their losing streak to Ateneo, which dates back to the second round of Season 75.
"Napag usapan din namin 'yun, sabi ko in my past four years in the UAAP never pa kaming nanalo na first game sa UAAP," she said.
Pons teamed up with Basas to lead the Lady Tamaraws with 14 points apiece. Transferee Celine Domingo added 10.
Jhoanna Maraguinot and Kat Tolentino combined for 35 points for the Lady Eagles.
The Lady Tamaraws will next face the Adamson Lady Falcons on Saturday at the FilOil Flying-V Centre in San Juan.
