MANILA, Philippines — Arellano bounced back from a wobbly stand in the second set with strong efforts in the next two as it repelled Jose Rizal U, 25-11, 22-25, 25-18, 25-16, to stretch its win run to four in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan yesterday.

The Lady Chiefs struggled in the early going of the second set and fell short of their comeback bid but imposed their will in the third and fourth frames to stay unbeaten.

“I’m happy (with our fourth straight win) but I’m also a bit disappointed because we dominated the first set but come second set, my players relaxed a bit. Our tendency to relax after winning one or two sets showed again. I just made them realize that we cannot underestimate JRU and I reminded them about our target,” said Arellano coach Obet Javier.

Regine Arocha punched in a game-high 20 points on 14 attacks, five aces and a block, Jovielyn Prado came through with 17, Mary Esguerra wound up with 12, Necole Ebuen scored 11 while Andrea Marzan added 10 for the Lady Chiefs.

Rhea Ramirez, in her second game back from a shoulder injury, tossed in 45 excellent sets on top of her five-point output for Arellano.

Skipper Shola Alvarez logged 19 markers built on 15 hits and four aces, Dolly Verzosa chalked up 12 while Karen Montojo had 10 for the Lady Bombers who failed to stretch their back-to-back triumphs and fell to 2-2.

San Beda, meanwhile, upended Saint Benilde, 25-22, 24-26, 27-25, 25-19, to stay in second with a 3-0 slate.

The Lady Red Spikers, who yielded the second set on their own error following a Lady Blazers attack, fought back behind Nieza Viray in another back-and-forth finish in the third and in their 8-1 closing rally in the fourth.
