San Miguel-NC wrests Fil-Am Srs lead vs Southwoods
BAGUIO, Philippines – Chito Laureta turned in a one-over 70 worth 35 points as San Miguel-Northern Cement assembled a 135 to wrest a five-point lead over Manila Southwoods halfway through the Seniors Fil-Championship of the 67th Fil-Am Golf Invitational tournament presented by San Miguel at the Camp John Hay Golf Club here yesterday.
Benjie Sumulong and Bong Sison backed Laureta with a pair of 34s while former pro Eddie Bagtas and Jinky Tuason chipped in 32 apiece, one of which counted for the team’s output and a 265 aggregate.
The defending champions thus surged from 4-down to 5-up heading to the last 36 holes of the event set at the shorter but trickier Baguio Country Club starting tomorrow.
Laureta gunned down three birdies against four bogeys at the up-and-down par-69 layout to lead San Miguel-Northern Cement’s second round charge.
Raul Miñoza carded a second straight 34, Kui Sun Moon made a 33, Edmund Yee, slowed down with a 31 after a 38, and Chang Duk Jung added a 28 as Southwoods pooled a 126 after a 134 for a 260 total.
Megafiber shot a 125 for third at 251 while 2014 winner Pugo Adventure hobbled with a 120 and fell way behind with a 238.
Dugong Bughaw scored a 97 for a 208 to widen its lead over defending champion San Miguel-Northern Cement I to 14 in Seniors Am Championship at the BCC layout.
Noel Marcellano paced Dugong Bughaw again, scoring 26 points, Edgar Lee and Marlon Soriano added 24 apiece, while Wilfredo Princesa made a 23.
The field also takes a break today and will resume their title drive at John Hay tomorrow.
Rudy Amata led San Miguel-Northern Cement 1 with 28, Jeric Hechanova had 27, while Bobby Inigo and Arnold Duay shot 18 and 17 points, respectively.
Bryan Park led Southwoods with 24 points for the team’s 88-point output and 192 total to slip to third, one point off Nueva Ecija, which turned in the day’s best score of 100.
Meanwhile, Camp Aguinaldo put in a second straight 106 but took a two-point deduction and found its lead reduce to only three points after two rounds in Senior’s Fil-A.
The team has 210 points for a three-point lead over Philippine Navy Golf Club, which shot 108 points for a 207.
Domingo Manuel led Aguinaldo with 30 points, Arthur Ang made a 29, while Martin Limgenco and Philip del Carmen added with 27 and 20, respectively.
The Navymen drew 29 points from Antonio Mendoza and Romulo Narcida and a pair of 25s from Reynaldo Ochosa and Eduardo Lena for the team’s 207 total.
