Sea Lions romp over Gold Gears
MANILA, Philippines - Olivarez College held Bulacan State University to just 11 points in the second quarter and fashioned out a 104-82 rout yesterday in the second round of the Universities and Colleges Basketball League at the Olivarez Sports Center in Sucat, Parañaque.
The Sea Lions bucked another slow start with a big run in the second period with Mavrick Saguiguit hitting back-to-back triples to key the romp.
Saguiguit then combined with Richard Singh in the stretch and finished with 17 points each as the Sea Lions got back at their first round tormentor to boost their Final Four drive with a 4-3 mark.
The BSU Gold Gears, who beat the Sea Lions, 96-91, in their first meeting, dropped to a share of fourth with Colegio De San Lorenzo at 3-4.
In the second game, Technological Institute of the Philippines watched University of Batangas’ Ar-Jhay Gabriel bungle his two free throws in the last 20 seconds as it eked out a a 73-69 win for a 5-2 mark.
With the victory, the Engineers firmed up their hold of second spot with 5-2 win-loss slate, while the Brahmans dropped to 0-7.
The 5-foot-11 Saguiguit finished 3-of-7 from the three-point zone to highlight a superb all-around showing while Singh made all but three of his 10 attempts from the perimeter.
