Cubs beat LS-Greenhills side, gain quarterfinals

MANILA, Philippines – San Beda-A crushed La Salle-Greenhills-B, 96-63, to clinch a quarterfinal berth in the junior division while Letran toppled Jose Rizal University, 72-64, to stay in the race in the 22nd Fr. Martin Cup summer basketball tournament at San Beda gym in Mendiola recently.

Kai Sese and Ain Obena scored in double digits to power the Red Cubs to the emphatic win over the LSG-B side to secure a spot in the next round with a fifth straight victory.

Kiefer Cordero, meanwhile, struck for seven points to bail the Squires out of trouble and into a 12-point triumph over the JRU Light Bombers for their fifth win against three losses.

Letran, however, needs to hurdle its last assignment to join early qualifiers Far Eastern U and Chiang Kai Shek College.

Other quarterfinalists were University of Perpetual Help, defending champion National University Bulldogs and Adamson in Group B.

Also disputing the last two slots are San Beda-B, Emilio Aguinaldo College-ICA and JRU.

JRU, which also dropped to 5-3, moved in contention after beating PACE, 115-35, the other day.
