Tabuena ends up joint 4th, earns P2M

MANILA, Philippines – Miguel Tabuena failed to birdie the closing par-5 18th at resumption of the weather suspended final round of the Singapore Open, settling for a 68 and joint fourth with Japanese Shintaro Kobayashi in the $1 million event won by Korean Younghan Song, who nipped world No. 1 Jordan Spieth by one at the Sentosa Golf Club’s Serapong course yesterday.

Tabuena had hoped for a third place effort after play was suspended late Sunday with the Filipino ace putting on a strong backside charge with three birdies with one hole left. But he had teed off in windy condition before the siren sounded with threat of lightning, pushing his drive to the right.

At resumption early Monday, Tabuena couldn’t go for the green unlike in the first three rounds, needing to punch out before missing a birdie putt from makeable distance for a par and a 68.

He wound up with a nine-under 295 total for a share of fourth with Kobayashi, who matched par 71, and pocketed $45,500 (P2 million).

Spieth capped his late charge with a birdie on the 18th for a five-under 66 and a 273 but still fell short by one off Hong, who took the crown with a 272 aggregate after a 70.

Chinese Liang Wen-Chong ended up solo third at 274 after a 69.

Juvic Pagunsan rallied with a 67 to salvage joint 21st with Japanese Ippei Koike, who fired a 68, while Tony Lascuna matched par 71 to finish tied for 28th at 283.

Angelo Que, a three-time Asian Tour winner, failed to sustain a solid 68 Saturday and fumbled with a 74, ending up in joint 38th at 285.

After holing out, Tabuena took the next flight to Myanmar for the $750,000 Myanmar Open, the second leg of the Asian Tour and the Japan PGA Tour where he hopes to better his performance in Singapore.
