Cyna falters with 77 but makes LPGA cut

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Cyna Rodriguez eagled the reachable No. 7 for the second straight day but had too many bogeys and limped to a four-over 77 to tumble down halfway through the Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic paced by American Megan Khang and two others at the Paradise Island course in Bahamas Friday.

Impressive with her three-under 70 that put her in joint 10th Thursday, Rodriguez tumbled to a share of 57th with her 38-37 card for a 147 total as she barely made the cut in her LPGA debut pegged at 148.

Unlike in the first round where she bucked the wind and cold on a late start, the Filipina ace struggled while teeing off in the first flight, bogeying two of the first six holes on missed green mishaps. But she reached the par-5 seventh in two and matched her eagle feat Thursday only to reel back with four bogeys in a seven-hole stretch from No. 8.

She also flubbed a couple of makeable birdie putts and settled for pars in the last four holes and fell nine strokes off the pace in the $1.4 million  event.

Khang eagled the par-5 No. 4 and added four birdies at the back against a lone bogey, her 68 giving her a 138 aggregate and a share of the lead with Japanese Haru Nomura and Britain’s Charley Hull, who carded identical 70s.

Korean See Young Kim also fired a 68 to grab a share of fourth at 139 with Swede Anna Nordqvist, Korean Min Seo Kwak and Scot Catriona Matthew, who carded 69, 70 and 71, respectively.

Meanwhile, Miguel Tabuena completed his second round with a four-under 67 and moved up to sixth spot, a shot ahead of world No. 1 Jordan Spieth, at the resumption of the $1 million SMBC Singapore Open at the Sentosa Golf Club yesterday morning.

At press time, Tabuena was even par through the first 10 holes of the third round and six under overall in the tourney, four off leader Song Young Han of Korea.

Song zoomed to the lead after the second round with an eight-under 63 for a 133 total. South Africa’s Keith Horne was second at 68-134.
