MELBOURNE, Australia – Roger Federer has advanced to his 39th Grand Slam semifinal, beating Tomas Berdych 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-4 in the Australian Open quarterfinals.
The No. 3-ranked Federer put on a dazzling display of footwork and shot variety against the No. 6-ranked Czech, improving his record over Berdych to 16-6.
The win makes Federer the oldest man since 1979 to reach the Australian Open semifinals. The 17-time Grand Slam winner is 34 years, 176 days old.
His next opponent is the winner of an evening match between No. 1 Novak Djokovic and No. 7 Kei Nishikori.
Federer is bidding to win his 5th Australian Open and his first Grand Slam since 2012 Wimbledon.
