Milos Raonic has advanced to the third round after overcoming determined veteran Tommy Robredo 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5), 7-5. Raonic closed out the match on his third match point, breaking Robredo's serve to win with the only service break.
The strong-serving Canadian fired 24 aces, but he also made 59 unforced errors, compared to 17 for Robredo.
Wednesday's win gives Raonic a 6-0 record against Robredo, who is 33 and ranked 42nd.
The No. 13-seeded Raonic, who was a 2014 Wimbledon semifinalist, has never advanced beyond the quarterfinals in Melbourne.
Raonic warmed up for the Australian open by winning his eighth career title at Brisbane, where he beat Roger Federer in the final.
