Calma rules Vios Cup, wins car
MANILA, Philippines - Andres Calma of Toyota Alabang flashed top form and bested a tough field to capture the Vios Cup Season 2 overall championship in Subic recently.
Calma, 20, came into the final leg as the series’ points leader and kept his position with superb driving, thwarting his rivals in the pressure-packed finale that doubled the championship points.
He wrapped up the eight-race, four-leg series with a total of 182 points, 29 points ahead of Allan Uy of Toyota Quezon Avenue, who wound up with 153 points.
Daniel Miranda of Toyota Balintawak placed third with 136 points while Estefano Rivera of Toyota Alabang and Basti Escalante of Toyota-Otis pooled 120 and 90 points, respectively.
“I’m happy to turn what was once my dream to reality,” said the De La Salle U sophomore and son of former PBA great Hector. ”I’m thankful for the all-out support of my parents and the trust given by our boss Mike Lee and the whole Toyota Alabang Team.”
He also cited his hard-working chief mechanic Gino Memije and other mechanics who helped achieve his goal.
For his feat, Calma, who started out in karting at age nine before pursuing his dream as a race car driver, won a brand-new Vios Manual 1.5G, one of the biggest prizes in local motorsports backed by Toyota Racing Development, Bridgestone, ROTA, Motul, Denso, AVT, Brembo, OMP and Tuason Racing.com.
