MANILA, Philippines – She's not hailed the best tennis player for nothing.
World No. 1 and Philippine Maverick stalwart Serena Williams has once again proved her star value after being named as Sports Illustrated's Sportsperson of the Year.
Williams, who fell short of a calendar Grand Slam after losing in the US Open last September, posted a 53-3 card this tennis season.
The American athlete, who was put in a pedestal after a steady stellar outing a in sport that was predominantly rich and white, was "a decisive choice" according to the magazine's managing editor, Christian Stone wrote in an explainer.
“She was a difference-maker in other areas, speaking out against bodyshamers in both words and actions," he added.
The Maverick is the 10th female and the first lady netter to recieve the citation since the legendary Arthur Ashe, according to SI.
Williams edged Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (horse racing), World Cup-winning US women's football team (soccer) and Golden State Warriors guard and NBA MVP Stephen Curry.
