Uno High keeps PCYAA crown in thriller

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Uno High School pulled off a thrilling 52-51 win over Jubilee Christian Academy and completed another title sweep in the women’s Philippine Ching Yuen Athletic Association (PCYAA) at the Uno High School gym in Tondo, Manila recently.

After Gelsey Nikka Taguibao shattered the 51-all count with a split in the closing seconds, the Uneans denied JCA a clear shot with a resolute defense to snare the victory and complete an 11-game sweep of the tournament for the second straight year.

“I want to thank the Uno community for its all-out support,” said Milton Yu, Uno High School Sports director and prefect of discipline.  “One of the team’s great assets was that it played as a team. Nobody cared for the individual stats or who would end up as the highest pointer of the team. The unconditional support of the parents also played a huge role in our success this year.”

Other members of the Haina Lee-mentored Uno squad were Vivian Chua, Patricia Yap, Jodie Erika Yu, Angelica Marie Lim, Michaella Co, Kate Sofia Ang and Leilah Soriano.

Saint Jude Catholic School also retained its crown in the Developmental Division (for boys 11 and under) after sweeping Pace Academy in their best-of-three series.

In table tennis, Saint Peter the Apostle Church topped the Juniors Boys Division while Saint Jude Catholic and Grace Christian College bagged the Juniors Girls and Aspirants Boys divisions titles, respectively.

Meanwhile, the third PCYAA basketball competitions resume on Jan. 9 next year.
