MANILA, Philippines – When he’s done fighting, Manny Pacquiao will be remembered as the fighter who kept going after Floyd Mayweather Jr. for a megabuck showdown.
"That’s how Floyd Mayweather Sr. said he’ll summarize Pacquiao’s brilliant boxing career once the fighting congressman hangs up his gloves.
In a recent interview with Jenna J of On The Ropes Boxing, the elder Mayweather minced no words in downplaying Pacquiao’s ability, insisting that his son had an easy time defeating Pacquiao in boxing’s richest fight ever last May.
I’ll look at him [Pacquiao] like a man that was chasing Floyd for years to fight, a fight that was an easy fight for Floyd. I told everybody that the fight was easy,” Floyd Sr. said.
“I don’t care how long they waited, when the fight took place, Floyd did what he said he was gonna do and I don’t think nobody was wrong in this situation for picking Floyd,” he added.
Mayweather said he isn’t impressed with Pacquiao’s biggest victories – fights that will inevitably tow the Filipino icon to the boxing Hall of Fame someday.
“I’m gonna be honest with you, when you get to telling the truth about things, the truth is the one thing that’s gonna set you free. I truly believe that pretty much all of those fights that Pacquiao was winning, he had a way he was winning, it wasn’t looking that good the way he was winning fights,” he continued.
In the same interview, Mayweather found another opportunity to score Pacquiao’s longtime trainer Freddie Roach, whom he has been fondly calling as “The Joke Coach”.
“He [Pacquiao] was hitting but he didn’t do nothing when he hadn’t done nothing. It is what it is, and Freddie ‘The Joke Coach’ Roach, he’s still talking about how he wants Manny Pacquiao to fight Floyd again. Come on man, he needs to go sit down somewhere. Freddie Roach is the joke,” he further said.
Mayweather trained his son for the Pacquiao fight, and with Floyd Jr. outpointing his rival, his father sees it as a personal victory for him too over Roach.
“My son beat him as a fighter and I beat him as a trainer. It was easy for me to beat him. He’s the one that hasn’t won no damn fights this year, everybody whooped his boys’ ass,” said Floyd Sr., referring to the fact that Roach also trained Miguel Cotto, who recently lost to Saul Alvarez in this year’s other big fight.
